The Temple of Apollo in Didim is the heart of the ancient sanctuary of Didyma. Didyma was not a city but a sanctuary of Apollo belonging to Miletus, and its oracle ranked second only to Delphi. Pilgrims reached it along the Sacred Way, about 20 km from Miletus. Destroyed by the Persians in the early 5th century BC, it was revived under Alexander the Great in 334 BC and later planned to become the largest temple in the world.
