About Kayaköy Ghost Village (Levissi)

Kayaköy is an abandoned Greek town on a hillside about 8 km south of Fethiye. Formerly called Levissi (Livissi), it was emptied in the 1923 population exchange; today the ruins of around 500 stone houses are protected and can be visited as an open-air museum village. The town has many churches and chapels, above all the Taxiarchis (Upper Church) and Panagia Pyrgiotissa (Lower Church). Lying near the roads to Ölüdeniz, it suits a short half-day trip.

Highlights

  • Ruins of about 500 stone houses
  • Taxiarchis (Upper) Church
  • Panagia Pyrgiotissa (Lower) Church
  • Hillside views over the valley

Visiting tips

Paths between the ruins are stony and steep, so wear closed, comfortable shoes. There is little shade in summer: go early in the morning or late afternoon and bring water and a hat. The upper part with the churches has the best views.

Its Greek population left for Greece in the 1923 Greek–Turkish population exchange; the town was never resettled and is now a protected heritage site.
