About Kekova & Üçağız

Kekova is an uninhabited island of about 4.5 km² off the villages of Üçağız and Kaleköy in the Demre district; in antiquity it was called Dolichiste. Along its northern shore lie the remains of an ancient settlement destroyed by earthquakes in the 2nd century and partly submerged, visible beneath the shallow, clear water – hence the name 'sunken city'. Opposite, Kaleköy (ancient Simena) is known for its hilltop castle, a small theatre carved into the rock and Lycian sarcophagi standing in the sea; no road leads to the village. Üçağız (ancient Teimiussa), where the boat trips start, takes its name – 'three mouths' – from its three openings to the sea, and has ancient tombs along its shore. The Kekova area was declared a specially protected area in 1990 and is on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List.

Highlights

  • Sunken ruins along Kekova Island's shore
  • The hilltop castle at Kaleköy (Simena)
  • Lycian sarcophagi standing in the sea
  • Simena's small rock-cut theatre
  • Ancient tombs on the shore at Üçağız

Visiting tips

The easiest way to see the sunken city and Simena is by boat from Üçağız harbour. The path up to the castle at Kaleköy is steep and stony, so wear comfortable shoes. The sun on the water is strong – don't forget a hat and sunscreen.

How does the return work, does the driver wait?
