About Myra & St. Nicholas Church

Myra lies in today's Demre, on the fertile plain formed by the Myros river. By 168 BC it was one of the largest cities of the Lycian League, and when Lycia became a separate Roman province in 325 it became its capital. Its trademarks are two necropolises of temple-fronted Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs, and a Roman theatre damaged in the earthquake of AD 141 and then rebuilt. Myra is closely linked with Saint Nicholas, who was bishop here in the 4th century. The Church of St. Nicholas in the town centre was built in the 6th century on the foundations of an earlier church and extended in later centuries; it is known for its frescoes and a sarcophagus believed to have held the saint. Today the church is a museum and is on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List.

The church and the ruins of Myra are close to each other in Demre, so you can see both on one visit. As the church was once a place of worship, clothing that covers the shoulders is a good idea. The ruins are fully exposed, so in summer go early and bring water.

By road approximately: Demre ~2 km (~5 min), Finike ~30 km (~30 min), Kaş ~45 km (~45 min), Kumluca ~46 km (~40 min), Kalkan ~70 km (~65 min), Fethiye ~149 km (~140 min). Times are estimates without traffic and can be longer at peak times in summer.

How much is the transfer, are tickets included?
The price depends on the vehicle class and is per vehicle, not per person; prices by area are in the table on this page, and the exact price for your hotel appears instantly in the booking form. Entrance tickets are not included.

How does the return work, does the driver wait?
The return is planned as a separate transfer: in a return booking you choose the return time and the vehicle comes to pick you up then, so you do not pay for waiting time.

Do you provide child seats?
Yes. Baby and child seats are free; just state the children's ages when booking.

Are Saint Nicholas' relics still in Demre?
No. Most of the saint's remains were taken to Bari in Italy by sailors from Bari in 1087. In the church you can see a damaged sarcophagus uncovered during excavations and believed to be his original burial place.

Are services still held in the Church of St. Nicholas?
The church now operates as a museum. However, an Orthodox liturgy is occasionally celebrated there on 6 December, the saint's feast day.
