About Ancient Olympos

Olympos is an ancient Lycian city laid out along a stream valley that runs down to the sea near Çıralı, in the Kumluca district. It was one of the six leading cities of the Lycian League that held three votes. The ruins are scattered among trees and streamside vegetation inside Beydağları Coastal National Park, protected since 1972. Visitors can see Roman baths, the remains of a temple, early Byzantine churches with mosaic floors and necropolis areas lined with sarcophagi. The valley opens onto the beach, and the Yanartaş (Chimaera) flames nearby make a separate stop. It is about 40 km by road from Kemer (roughly 42 minutes).

Highlights

  • Ruins spread along a wooded stream valley
  • Necropolis areas lined with sarcophagi
  • Early Byzantine churches with mosaic floors
  • Remains of Roman baths
  • Olympos beach at the valley mouth
  • Nearby Yanartaş (Chimaera) natural flames

Visiting tips

The ruins are scattered through woodland and along the stream, so wear comfortable closed shoes, and pack swimwear and a towel if you plan to go down to the beach. Summers can be hot and humid, so carry water. It combines well on the same day with the Tahtalı cable car to the north.

Ancient Olympos transfer: FAQ

How far is Ancient Olympos from my hotel?
By road approximately: Kemer ~40 km (~45 min), Konyaaltı ~74 km (~70 min), Antalya Airport ~98 km (~95 min), Lara ~100 km (~95 min), Belek ~124 km (~115 min), Side ~157 km (~140 min), Alanya ~217 km (~180 min). Times are estimates without traffic and can be longer at peak times in summer.

How much is the transfer, are tickets included?
The price depends on the vehicle class and is per vehicle, not per person; prices by area are in the table on this page, and the exact price for your hotel appears instantly in the booking form. Entrance tickets are not included.

How does the return work, does the driver wait?
The return is planned as a separate transfer: in a return booking you choose the return time and the vehicle comes to pick you up then, so you do not pay for waiting time.

Do you provide child seats?
Yes. Baby and child seats are free; just state the children's ages when booking.

Is Yanartaş (Chimaera) inside ancient Olympos?
No. Yanartaş is a separate site on a hillside near Çıralı, where natural gas seeping from cracks in the rock feeds small, permanently burning flames. It is visited separately from the ancient city.

Why was Olympos an important Lycian city?
Olympos was one of the six cities of the Lycian League that held three votes, the highest share. Its early Byzantine churches and mosaics show the settlement stayed active after the Roman period.
