About Aspendos

Aspendos is an ancient Pamphylian city in Belkıs, in the Serik district of Antalya, close to the Köprüçay river (the ancient Eurymedon). Its main sight is the Roman theatre built under Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 161–180) by the architect Zenon, son of Theodoros; the stage building and seating survive largely intact. The Seljuks later repaired and used the theatre. On the hill behind it lie the remains of an agora, basilica and monumental fountain, and to the north stands an arched aqueduct. The theatre and aqueducts were added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List in 2015. Aspendos is about 18 km by road from Belek.

Highlights

  • The Roman theatre from Marcus Aurelius' reign
  • The largely intact stage building
  • Seljuk-period traces on the façade
  • Agora, basilica and fountain ruins on the acropolis
  • The arched Roman aqueduct north of the city

Visiting tips

The theatre offers some shade, but the rest of the site is exposed, so in summer go early in the morning or late in the afternoon and bring water. Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to walk up to the acropolis or out to the aqueduct on stony paths. Aspendos combines well in one day with Perge, Side or Köprülü Canyon; check current opening hours on the official museum website.

Aspendos transfer: FAQ

How far is Aspendos from my hotel?
By road approximately: Belek ~18 km (~20 min), Side ~35 km (~35 min), Antalya Airport ~40 km (~40 min), Lara ~50 km (~45 min), Konyaaltı ~56 km (~50 min), Kemer ~93 km (~80 min), Alanya ~94 km (~75 min). Times are estimates without traffic and can be longer at peak times in summer.

How much is the transfer, are tickets included?
The price depends on the vehicle class and is per vehicle, not per person; prices by area are in the table on this page, and the exact price for your hotel appears instantly in the booking form. Entrance tickets are not included.

How does the return work, does the driver wait?
The return is planned as a separate transfer: in a return booking you choose the return time and the vehicle comes to pick you up then, so you do not pay for waiting time.

Do you provide child seats?
Yes. Baby and child seats are free; just state the children's ages when booking.

Is the theatre at Aspendos still used for performances?
Yes. The theatre has hosted the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival since 1994. Dates and programme change every year, so check the festival's official announcements.

Can you see the Aspendos aqueduct?
Yes. The aqueduct stands north of the city, with an arched section about 1 km long and a pressure tower at each end; it is considered one of the better-preserved ancient water systems.
