About Perge
Perge was one of the major cities of Pamphylia and lies in the Aksu district, about 17 km east of Antalya city centre. Most of what you see dates from the 2nd–3rd centuries AD, when the city was rebuilt during the Pax Romana: a theatre, stadium, agora, baths and colonnaded streets with a water channel running down the middle. The Hellenistic city gate with its two round towers still stands. According to the Acts of the Apostles, St Paul visited Perge and preached here. Many statues found on site are displayed in the Antalya Museum. The site is about 11 km by road from Antalya Airport.
Highlights
- Hellenistic gate with two round towers
- Colonnaded street with its central water channel
- Roman stadium for about 12,000 spectators
- The agora and Roman baths
- Remains of the monumental fountains (nymphaea)
Visiting tips
The site is large and has little shade, so go early in the morning and bring a hat and water. Some areas, such as the theatre, may be closed for restoration; check the current status and opening hours on the official museum website. To see the statues found here, pair the visit with the Antalya Museum or Kaleiçi, or with Aspendos for a longer day.
