About Bodrum Castle & Museum of Underwater Archaeology

Bodrum Castle rises on the rocky peninsula that divides Bodrum harbour into two bays. It was built from 1402 onwards by the Knights of St John (Knights Hospitaller) as the Castle of St Peter, partly with stones taken from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Its English, French, German and Italian towers are named after the nations that built them. Since 1964 the castle has housed the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, which displays finds from shipwrecks along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. The highlight is the hall of the Uluburun shipwreck, a Late Bronze Age vessel found off Kaş.

Highlights

  • Uluburun shipwreck hall
  • Towers of four nations
  • Views over the harbour and marina
  • Walking distance to Bodrum bazaar

Visiting tips

There are many steps and stone floors inside the castle, so wear comfortable shoes. In summer go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. A visit combines easily with the Mausoleum and Bodrum bazaar on the same day.
