About Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was the monumental tomb built in 353–351 BC for Mausolus, satrap of Caria, in ancient Halicarnassus on the site of today's Bodrum. Under his wife and sister Artemisia II, famous Greek architects and sculptors created a structure about 45 metres high that was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – the word 'mausoleum' comes from it. Earthquakes between the 12th and 14th centuries brought it down and its stones were later used in Bodrum Castle. Today the site shows the foundations, the entrance to the tomb chamber and column fragments.
