About Patara Ancient City & Beach
Patara is an ancient Lycian city on the Mediterranean coast near the village of Gelemiş in the Kaş district. It was one of the principal members of the Lycian League, founded in 176 BC, holding the maximum of three votes. Highlights include the bouleuterion (assembly hall) of the early 1st century BC, which seated around 1,400 people; the theatre, rebuilt after an earthquake in AD 147; the triple-arched Gate of Mettius Modestus from around AD 100; and a lighthouse built under Nero in AD 60. According to tradition, Saint Nicholas was born in Patara. Right next to the ruins begins Patara Beach, around 18 km of sand backed by dunes and one of the key nesting sites of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).
