About Iotape Ancient City (Aytap)
Iotape is an ancient harbour city between Alanya and Gazipaşa, right beside the D400 coastal road, built on a small peninsula reaching into the sea. It was founded in AD 52 by King Antiochus IV of Commagene and named after his queen Iotapa; in Roman times it minted its own coins. The bays on either side of the peninsula form a natural harbour. You can see the acropolis walls, bath ruins, bases of honorific statues and the necropolis, and swim in the coves.
Highlights
- Acropolis on a peninsula in the sea
- Bath ruins and honorific statue bases
- Swimmable coves on both sides
- Right on the D400, easy access
Visiting tips
The ruins spread over a rocky peninsula; wear closed, non-slip shoes. There is little shade, so bring water and a hat. If you want to swim in the coves, water shoes are useful.
