About Alanya Castle

Alanya Castle crowns a rocky peninsula rising about 250 metres above the sea and is the emblem of the town. Its origins go back to ancient Korakesion, but it largely took its present form under the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, who captured the city in 1220–1221. Some 6.5 km of walls run from the summit down to the harbour, the Red Tower and the medieval shipyard. Inside the walls lies Hisariçi, a still-inhabited quarter with old houses, cisterns and baths. The Inner Castle at the top holds a Byzantine church and chapels and the remains of a Seljuk palace; nearby are the Süleymaniye Mosque, rebuilt under Suleiman the Magnificent, the Bedesten and the Akşebe Sultan mosque and tomb of 1230. The castle and shipyard were added to UNESCO's Tentative List in 2009.

Highlights

  • About 6.5 km of Seljuk walls
  • Byzantine church and Seljuk palace remains in the Inner Castle
  • Süleymaniye Mosque, Bedesten and Akşebe Tomb
  • The historic Hisariçi quarter inside the walls
  • Views over Cleopatra Beach and the harbour

Visiting tips

The paths around the castle are steep and partly cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat and water in summer. The view is especially beautiful at sunset. Check current opening hours on the official museum website.

Times are estimates without traffic and can be longer at peak times in summer.

How much is the transfer, are tickets included?
The price depends on the vehicle class and is per vehicle, not per person; prices by area are in the table on this page, and the exact price for your hotel appears instantly in the booking form. Entrance tickets are not included.

How does the return work, does the driver wait?
The return is planned as a separate transfer: in a return booking you choose the return time and the vehicle comes to pick you up then, so you do not pay for waiting time.

Do you provide child seats?
Yes. Baby and child seats are free; just state the children's ages when booking.

Can you take a cable car up to Alanya Castle?
Yes. The Alanya cable car, opened in 2017, runs from its lower station in the Damlataş area up to the Ehmedek section of the castle. The line is about 900 metres long and passes over Damlataş Cave and Cleopatra Beach.

Is the Red Tower part of Alanya Castle?
Yes. The octagonal Red Tower on the harbour front was built by Alaeddin Keykubad in 1226 at the end of the walls guarding the port. About 33 metres high, it takes its name from the colour of its brick and now houses an ethnography museum.
