About Damlataş Cave

Damlataş Cave lies at the western foot of the Alanya castle rock, right where Cleopatra Beach begins and very close to the town centre. It was discovered by chance in 1948 in a quarry that supplied stone for Alanya's harbour. From the entrance a passage about 45–50 metres long and 15 metres high leads down to the main two-level chamber. The name means 'dripping stone', and its stalactites and stalagmites are thought to have formed over some 15,000 years. The temperature stays around 22–23 °C all year, humidity is about 95 %, and the air contains a markedly higher share of carbon dioxide than normal air. Because of this unusual microclimate, the cave has long been visited by people with asthma.

Highlights

  • Stalactites and stalagmites formed over millennia
  • A steady 22–23 °C all year round
  • A humid microclimate known to asthma sufferers
  • Right next to Cleopatra Beach and the cable car station

Visiting tips

It is very humid inside and the steps can be slippery, so wear shoes with good grip. A visit combines easily on the same day with Cleopatra Beach, the cable car and Alanya Castle.
